Ingraham Trail Safety Advisory
Winter Road to the NWT Diamond Mines
February 4th – April 1st, 2025
For the past 22 years a 400-kilometer-long winter ice road has been constructed to connect Yellowknife to the Northwest Territories’ three diamond mines. This road is built to resupply the diamond mines with thousands of truckloads of fuel, freight, and equipment in support of their year-round mining operations.
To access the winter road, these large haul trucks must travel north from Yellowknife across the 70-kilometer-long Ingraham Trail, before entering the ice road at Tibbitt Lake. The trucks depart Yellowknife travelling in groups or convoys, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the months of February and March. With more than 6000 loads planned for the 2025 winter road season, the Ingraham Trail will be extremely busy for all users.
Yellowknife’s robust tourism industry thrives during the winter months with visitors coming here from across the globe. Travelling along the Ingraham Trail to enjoy the wildlife, beautiful scenery, and the night-time Aurora viewing is very popular. However, during the winter road season, driving on the Trail must be done with extreme care and caution to ensure you are safe during your trip. For your safety, please bear in mind the following reminders;
- Do not stop or exit your vehicle on the Ingraham Trail roadway.
- Drive safely in accordance with road, weather, and traffic conditions.
- Use one of the many Territorial Park parking lots if you wish to pull off and stop.
- Do not walk or wander on the roadway for any reason.
- Ensure there is no traffic in either direction when re-entering the Trail.
With everyone’s cooperation, our winter road truck drivers, local traffic, and our many tourists can all enjoy a safe and memorable experience visiting and traversing the Ingraham Trail. Feel free to contact Barry Ettinger, Operations Manager at (306) 216-9914 for additional information.
